Kelly Moran – Echo in the Field
Kelly Moran’s new single “Echo in the Field” opens her upcoming album “Don’t Trust Mirrors” with signature synth and piano arpeggios, but there’s something different this time. The New York composer says this is the first track she’s written that makes her want to dance and “lose her shit” — a departure from her usual seated performances.
The song caps off six years of work on an album that started as a rhythmic follow-up to 2018’s “Ultraviolet” but shifted course during the pandemic. What began as club-inspired material evolved into something more reflective, exploring self-perception through distortion and the process of piecing yourself back together.
Moran worked with choreographer Juri Onuki (Caroline Polachek, Blood Orange) for the music video, confronting her fear of dancing on camera. The result shows a different side of her physicality — one not bound to a piano bench.
“Don’t Trust Mirrors” features Warp labelmate Bibio and comprises ten tracks of textural refractions. It follows 2024’s “Moves in the Field”, which The New York Times called “rapturous as a waterfall or delicate as vapor.”
The album drops October 1st via Warp Records, with Moran embarking on her most extensive US tour yet this fall.
